how to create a place

Learn how to add a demonstration garden to the statewide map.

1. Gather the data about the place. Those with an * are required.

  • Place name*: You will need to enter this first.
  • Year developed
  • Property Owner
  • Website
  • Image
  • Location*: Add the physical address
  • Coordinates*: see instructions below
  • Descriptive text: add some summary text that describes the garden.
  • Landscape labels: optional categories you can add, such as certifications.


2. Visit the place form

  • Check to make sure the place is not already on the map.
  • Go to the Place Form and enter the place name.
    • At times there is a one day lag between adding a demonstration garden, and viewing it on the map pages listed above.


3. Two options to find coordinates for a place

  • Use googlemaps.com:
    • find the location on the map and right click the map where you would like the marking pin to appear,
    • select 'what's here?', a pop up box will appear with the coordinates listed.
    • copy and paste coordinates to the coordinates filed in the place form.
  • Use openstreetmap.org:
    • find the location on the map and right click the map where you would like the marking pin to appear,
    • select 'show address', the coordinates will appear on a sidebar.
    • copy and paste coordinates to the coordinates filed in the place form.


About the place form

The place (map) functionality uses semantic media wiki extension to create a form to add place content to the toolbox. The mediawiki maps extension renders this information on a map service. Currently, open street maps is the map service used to display the information.
